Barnesville Baptist enjoys a rich legacy of faith inherited from generations past who taught us to love God’s Word, to support missions, and to care for others. We honor our history by preserving our original architecture and exhibiting artifacts in the church library and in displays. Timeline of Major Events in Church History


  • 1869Cornerstone of church laid

  • Sep. 24 1871Regular Baptist Church at Barnesville was dedicated, organized, and set apart to the worship of God

  • Oct. 21 1871“…A majority of all the members then belonging to the Barnesville Baptist Church assembled in the said church. Rev. Joseph H. Jones was called to the pastoral care of the church for one year. Brother R. T. White was elected Deacon and Brother Wm. O. Sellman as Assistant Deacon. Brother Samuel Darby was elected Church Clerk”. Rev. Joseph H. Jones was pastor for two months at the church he called his “monument” until his death.

  • May 8 1872Rev. William M. Davis of Loudoun County, Virginia was declared pastor of the church for one year.

  • Jun. 8 1872Articles of Incorporation signed to create the “The Trustees of the Barnesville Baptist Church in Montgomery County Maryland”.

  • Nov. 1873-1875Rev. John W. Marsh as Pastor

  • Sep. 1878-Sep. 1887Rev. Hillary E. Hatcher as Pastor

  • Oct. 20 1885Joined the Maryland Baptist Union Association, now the Baptist Convention of Maryland/Delaware

  • ca. 1886Joined the Western District Baptist Association

  • Jun. 1887Hosted the Western District Baptist Association Annual Meeting

  • Sep. 1887-Jun. 1888Rev. James H. Wright as Pastor

  • Sep. 1887Barnesville Baptist agreed to pay the pastor $250 a year for two sermons per month on the 2nd and 4th Sundays.

  • Oct. 1889-Dec. 1892Rev. L. R. Milbourne as Pastor

  • Jun. 12 1892Barnesville Baptist appointed four delegates and three alternates to the Western District Baptist Association to be held June 14 at Upper Seneca Baptist Church.

  • Apr. 1893-Sep. 1900Rev. S. R. White as Pastor

  • Oct. 1896Barnesville Baptist voted to give $10 to the association, $10 to foreign missions, and $5 to home missions. The women gave $3 to foreign missions and $3 to home missions.
